The number of femicides in Nicaragua continues to rise. In the first three months of 2023, the Observatorio Voces, from the feminist organization Catholics for the Right to Decide (CDD), has registered that at least 26 women have been victims of sexist violence.

The organization highlighted that March has been the most “painful” and “bloody” month for Nicaraguan women, because in this period 12 femicides were reported, of which two of them were registered abroad.

“It was a painful month. March being the month of women, where the struggles against sexist violence are commemorated, took more lives, leaving mourning and pain in the family and community, “said a member of the feminist entity to Article 66.

Catholics for the Right to Decide explained that, between January and March 2023, 16 of the 26 femicides were committed in the national territory and 10 were perpetrated abroad: five in Costa Rica, three in the United States, one in Mexico and another in Guatemala, countries where entire families have emigrated due to the repression of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

Nicaragua registers 26 femicides so far in 2023.

In Nicaragua, the autonomous regions of the Caribbean are the main areas of the country where femicides have been registered, totaling 5; It is followed by Managua with 3 and the departments of Chontales and Boaco with 2 each; Río San Juan, Jinotega, Chinandega and Rivas one murder of women each.

The CDD defender indicated that the data is “strong” because “the system is ordering to kill women by not having a commitment to protect the lives of women and that the family does not have justice.”

“Every day there is more impunity,” denounced the defender, referring to the men that the Ortega regime has released “without serving sentences, giving them pardons.”
