More than 13,000 displaced people have left the presence of illegal armed groups in Algeria (Cauca)

The Mayor of Algeria, southern Cauca Jonathan Patiño denounced that in the last three years there have been 27 massive displacements in the municipality as a consequence of the conflicts between illegal armed groups that dispute the territory.

According to the president, More than 26,000 people have been affected either by displacement or confinement.

“We have already had approximately 13,000 displaced people for three years, at the same time we have approximately 13,000 people in confinement, which is too large a figure. Continue the conflict pitifully. The displacement of the leaders, we believe that we have around 200 displaced leadersthat is to break the social fabric of a municipality like Argelia, Cauca,” said the president.

According to the Mayor, the armed groups that are the protagonists of the combats are the dissidents of ‘Carlos Patiño’ and the ELN, who are disputing the territory and they also generate confrontations against the National Army that tries to have a presence in the territory to guarantee security.

In the last days the Algerian community has been denouncing that the dissidents are getting closer to the Sinai sector, by the municipal seat and questioned the actions of the Army, which due to its lack of presence, would be leaving some spaces free for mobility that the guerrillas took advantage of.

“We hope that this government will help us to overcome the conflict that the country is suffering, because many groups have appeared due to the lack of implementation of the peace agreement“, pointed out the Mayor of Argelia, Cauca, a sixth category municipality.

According to data from Human Rights Watch, so far this year in Cauca there have been five murders of social leaders.
