Government appoints CVG Audit Board, after the arrest of Pedro Maldonado

The government appointed an Auditing Board of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana. In accordance with the decree, the intervention will last for one year and may be extended for the same period of time. The appointment occurs one day after commissions of the Sebin political police and the Bolívar Anti-Corruption Police arrested the president of the Corporation and vice-minister of Basic Industries, Pedro Maldonad


The government appointed an Audit Board of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG), through a presidential decree in the Official Gazette number 6741 dated March 31 of the current year.

In accordance with the decree, the intervention will last for one year and may be extended for the same period of time. “The intervention of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG), a public institute attached to the Ministry of Popular Power for Industries and National Production, is ordered,” reads article 1 of the decree.

In this sense, the Audit Board will be coordinated, supervised and controlled by the Executive Vice Presidency of Venezuela. “The following citizens are appointed as members of the Audit Board of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG): Héctor José Silva Hernández, V-15.644.126, president and Alexis José Rodríguez Cabello, V8.959.785 , Vice President”, reported the Official Gazette.

The appointment occurs one day after commissions of the Sebin political police and the Anti-Corruption Police in Bolívar arrested the president of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG) and deputy minister of Basic Industries, Pedro Maldonado, according to Correo del Caroní.

According to the report, police officers kept the adjacencies of the CVG headquarters located in Ciudad Guayana taken on Thursday morning, while employees reported that “no one could enter or leave the building.”

Among the detainees would also be Néstor Astudillo, president of Sidor.

Maldonado led the CVG for four and a half years, and had previously held the presidency of the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) between 2017 and 2018, as well as the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) from 2010 to 2014.

Various sources informed the media that in addition to the president of the CVG, there are five other people from the board of the state steel company who were arrested.

The information was confirmed by the Minister of Communication and Information, Freddy Náñez, on his Twitter account. “The Venezuelan people are informed that the National Anti-Corruption Police has requested the MP (Public Ministry) to prosecute a group of CVG officials and businessmen.”
