MIAMI, United States. — A massive migration of red crabs has flooded a section of a highway that connects the province of Cienfuegos with the municipality of Trinidad in the Spirit of Spirit, reported the state agency Latin Press.
The phenomenon was notified by specialists from the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), who indicated that the new migration has been manifesting itself for days on the Circuito Sur highway adjacent to the coastal area between Trinidad and Cienfuegos.
Mass migration of red crabs is common at this time of year. Various reports indicate that millions of red crabs are crushed to death annually in that area of Cuba during their reproduction cycles.
With the arrival of spring, the red crabs leave the forest and travel to the Bay of Pigs area, crossing the roads. At least three and a half million of them die crushed by transport vehicles.
Although the mass migration process usually occurs between April and May, it could last until July.
The local authorities of the provinces of Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus have sought solutions to avoid the deaths of the crabs; however, the alternatives found in recent years have not been successful.
“Some bridges were built nearby, about 15 kilometers from here, after Punta Perdiz, but it’s not that they work that much, because there is very little space,” he told the agency last year. euronews Amaury Urra, who works as a guide in the area.
The presence of red crabs in the area during mass migration also poses a threat to drivers, since the crustaceans, feeling threatened, can cross the tires with their spikes.
Red crabs make their lives in swamps, swamps, mangrove swamps, and other soft, muddy terrain, where they create caverns that are about 10 and more centimeters in diameter and almost two meters deep.
