Unemployment in February stood at 8.1% and fell compared to January, which implies 8,800 fewer unemployed

The unemployment rate for the month of February stood at 8.1%, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and prepared from the Continuous Household Survey.

In January unemployment was 8.5%, which implies a reduction of 8,800 unemployed people, a universe of 147,900. Unemployment continues to be higher in the interior of the country (8.5%) than in Montevideo (7.6%).

On the other hand, the employment rate remained at 57.5% between January and February 2023, while the activity rate fell from 62.9% to 62.6%.

The INE also detailed that the number of underemployed people increased by 7.5%. Underemployed are those who work less than 40 hours per week and would like to work longer, but cannot find more work.

The percentage of people who did not have a social security record went from 19.6% in January to 20.1% in February and, in terms of the average effective hours worked, the estimate also grew from 27.3 to 34, 3 hours.
