On Saturday, February 5 in Punta del Este four men chased, beat and tried to kidnap an 18-year-old boy for thinking he was a criminalaccording to the victim’s father, Pablo Romero, in a statement published in the media agent. The four involved were summoned without date after voluntarily declaring to the policeand the case is already in the hands of the 2nd Shift Maldonado attorney, Ana Rosés, they informed The Observer sources from the Ministry of the Interior and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The event, as detailed by Romero in the statement, occurred around 8:30 p.m. this Saturday. His son left the house that the family rented in Punta del Este with a hat and visorand a few meters he was intercepted by beatings by a person who lives in the adjoining housewhich was accompanied by “three or four other guys” with blackjacks.
Those involved thought it was a thief who had robbed their house two weeks ago.so that they wanted to take justice into their own handsaccording to the complaint in the hands of the Prosecutor’s Office.
At first the young man escaped, but he was approached by a quadricycle that ran over him, and then he was beaten by the other people involved. As detailed by Romero, in the words of his son, these people they tried to put him in a carbut before they succeeded, he was able to escape and convince them that he resided in the house next door.
The father of the young man attacked, who is an advisor to the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP), indicated that the four people followed behind the injured person, alleging that, if he lied about that being his house, they were going to “shoot him and throw him in a ditch”. Upon arrival, the mother received the young man and learned what had happened, with the men behind her.
Romero explained that one of those involved wanted to give the young man $3,500 for breaking his hat, but the family indicated that they were going to denounce them. The ANEP adviser added that one of those responsible replied that “I was going to waste my time denouncing” because one of them is the son of an ambassador.
From the Ministry of the Interior they affirmed that in the next few hours the father of the victim, and one of the four involved, will be summoned to testify. The prosecutor Roses was contacted by The Observer but he preferred not to make any statements while the investigation progresses.
to err is human
Another of the points that Romero pointed out in his public letter was the actions of the police when they went to the place to take the complaint. Those involved, according to Romero, admitted to the police officers that they had confused the young man with a thief.
“Could someone tell us where in our legislation it is stated that if you see someone walking down the street that you presume could be a thief, you have the legal right to attack, kidnap, steal,
threaten him with death or even kill him? We tell him that what he is saying is nonsense and the intervening agents ask us not to dialogue between the parties, “wrote the victim’s father and added: “A separate point is also deserved by the final comment made by the policewoman of the 911 Maldonado who intervened. Before getting on the mobile and before indicating the steps to follow, she tells us that “there are many robberies in the area and that is why the reaction, that to err is human”.
“You draw your own conclusions regarding the comment we received in such a situation,” he closed.
Romero explained that he made the complaint public because he understands that the case transcends “family interest.
