Workers denounce that fire in the Uverito forest has consumed 30 thousand hectares

William López, a logging worker from the Uverito forest, denounced that the fire has lasted for at least 20 days

The Uverito forest, located between the Anzoátegui and Monagas states, continues to report forest fires. Workers reported that the fire originated on Thursday, March 23, and has consumed 30,000 hectares.

A note posted by the whistle indicated that the information provided by the workers contradicts the statements of a security worker. He stressed that the source did not identify himself because he was not authorized to testify and indicated that on Thursday the flames were put out in different parts of the forest.

William López, a union member of the Maderas de Venezuela y Turkey (Mavetur) company, told the outlet that the fire has lasted for at least 20 days. “The company only has two tractors, one good and one in poor condition. There is no way to fight the fires,” said the worker.

In addition to the lack of equipment and supplies to fight the flames, the Mavetur forest firefighters have been fired, says William López, who explained that the company separated 10 officials from their jobs in the Los Hatos camp, in Anzoátegui.

State of the Uverito Forest

William López, a trade unionist in the former Maderas del Orinoco, assures that the fires are due to the “negligence of Mavetur.” The lumber worker specified that the pine trees that are still usable are near the town of Uverito. Although they are also at risk, he warns.

“In four years, the company has only planted 19,600 hectares of pine trees,” López asserted. The annual goal should be between 25,000 and 30,000 hectares, the numbers managed by the former company belonging to the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana.
