The Head of State recalled the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup d’état and the dictatorship in Chile, to summon all the leaders not to be silent about the Nicaraguan government under the command of Daniel Ortega, who deported more than 200 political prisoners. “It seems you don’t know, Ortega, that the homeland is carried in your soul and blood and is not removed by decree.”

The Chilean president specifically mentioned the cases of the writers Sergio Ramírez and Gioconda Belli and the historic ex-guerrilla Dora María Téllez.

Likewise, President Boric pointed out that democracy must be defended with more democracy, for which reason he recalled the past and current constituent process. “The problems of democracy are solved with more democracy and never with less,” he said.

Migration

Gabriel Boric specified that migration is one of the most important challenges for the region, and that the best way to carry it out is joint work between the countries of “origin, transit and destination; under the principle of shared responsibility and regional solidarity”.

In this sense, the President called on the leaders present to achieve among all “a regular, orderly and humane migration, which protects the people who emigrate and the human communities to which they arrive.”

In any case, he stressed the importance of intensifying coordination between police and immigration authorities to counter organized transnational crime networks. “It is unacceptable and we must be angry that a few people take advantage of this crisis and come to our countries to make immigration a business or a way to learn about current legislation. In Chile we are not going to accept it.”

He also called to “protect and strengthen” the Ibero-American Community, whose member countries highlighted solidarity.
