The XXVIII Ibero-American Summit, attended by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, was inaugurated this Friday in the Dominican Republic, at the Santo Domingo Fortress.
At 7:00 p.m., members of the different delegations began to arrive at the site, located in the colonial zone of the Dominican capital, the Presidency reported in a message.
The Cuban president was received by Dominican President Luis Abinader. “After seven o’clock this Friday, the arrival of the delegations to the emblematic site, located in the colonial zone of the city of Santo Domingo, began. President @DiazCanelB and his wife @liscuestacuba were received by the president @luisabinader. #RD2023 Summit”.
“This summit will seek to achieve concrete things that have a positive impact on the quality of life of the Ibero-American peoples,” said the Ibero-American Secretary General, Andrés Allamand, when speaking at the opening ceremony.
For his part, in his inaugural speech, Dominican President Luis Abinader emphasized unity among the countries of the Ibero-American community. “There are more ties that unite us than separate us,” he said.
“Divine Providence placed the Dominicans in the center of the continent, the link between Europe and the New World. Today, at a crucial moment for humanity, when we are facing a change of times, paradigms that we took for granted, it is necessary to look for a possible utopia”.
“We still have a long way to go,” he said, “and on that journey, we need, as leaders in whom our peoples have placed their trust, to develop the capacity to overcome political differences and dialogue in a sincere and friendly manner.”
The act closed with an artistic show, applauded by the participants.
Finally, the leaders participated in a dinner offered by the Dominican head of state to his counterparts and to the heads of delegations and guests.
Starting at 9 am today, Saturday, local time, the Summit was in session at the Convention Center of the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the interventions of the heads of State and Government. Then the documents of the Summit will be approved, among them the “Declaration of Santo Domingo”.
