UN Human Rights Committee recommends to Panama legislative reforms in favor of the LGBTIQ community

The UN Human Rights Committee issued its final observations on the fourth periodic report of Panama this Friday and recommended legislative reforms to “prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity”, these recommendations are given just after the Supreme Court of Justice will rule against the claims of equal marriage through a lawsuit to the Family Code.

The UN Committee stated that these reforms are necessary “to fully recognize the equality of same-sex couples and guarantee their rights under the Covenant.”

Another aspect in the Committee’s observations was the efforts of the State party to protect the human rights of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

It expressed concern about reports that these people are allegedly victims of murder, disappearances, sexual violence, trafficking, assaults, robberies, intimidation and threats by criminal groups along the Darien Gap in Panama.

He called on the authorities to adopt the necessary measures to protect the lives and safety of migrants crossing the Darien Gap and redouble their efforts to investigate and punish those who abused the rights of migrants.
