Dilma Rousseff elected as president of the BRICS bank

The former president Brazilian Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016) was elected as the new president of the development bank for BRICS, a forum that Brazil integrates together with Russia, India, China and South Africa. His mandate extends until 2025, the entity reported this Friday.

“On March 24, 2023, the Board of Governors of the NBD” (New Development Bank) unanimously elected “Rousseff” as president of the bank, with immediate effect,” said the body in a note citing efe.

Rousseff had been nominated for the position by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The appointment comes on the eve of the state visit to China, Brazil’s largest trading partner, which Lula plans to make starting next week.

The NBD, which is based in Shanghai, was created in 2014, when Rousseff was in charge of the Brazilian Presidency, which she succeeded Lula in 2011 and held until she was removed in 2016 by Congress in a political trial for alleged irregular budget management.

Rousseff will replace the Brazilian diplomat Marcos Prado Troyjo at the head of the BRICS development bank, who took office in 2020 and whose term ended in 2025, which will now be completed by the former Brazilian president.

The BRICS development bank is focused on financing infrastructure projects in its five members, but it also supports developing countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt and Uruguay, admitted as bank partners in 2021.
