Jean-François Fogel, pioneer of digital journalism, has died

French journalist Jean-François Fogel died in Paris at the age of 76. He was one of the pioneers of European digital journalism, a member of the Gabo Foundation and author of several books, including “The press without Gutenberg”


The French journalist and essayist Jean François Fogel, one of the pioneers of European digital journalism, died this Sunday, March 19, in Paris, at the age of 76. Bruno Patiño, friend, colleague and co-author of the book The press without Gutenberg (one of the great works referring to the emergence of digital media in the world, published in 2005) communicated the news with a post on Twitter.

“Jean-François Fogel (JFF) left us today, March 19, 2023. His family and those who love him are amazed and heartbroken,” Patiño wrote on the social network.

Forgel biography

Fogel job for the Agence France-Pressethe newspaper Liberation and the weekly publication Le Point. In addition, for several decades she has advised press organizations in Europe and Latin America on different projects related to cultural change, the production of narratives and digital transformation. In this role, she was key in renewing the platform on-line and the creation of the first paid content of the world (1994 to 2002), leading daily in France.

In 2010 he dedicated himself to renewing the six sites of the newspapers of the French group SudOuest, where he was an advisor on digital strategy. In recent years, he has been in charge of creating a digital information platform for the France Televisions group, one of the three largest in France.

In parallel to his professional work, Fogel published numerous books and was part of the teaching team at the school of journalism and director of the Executive Master of Media Management at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po). In addition, he was president of the Governing Council of the Gabo Foundationan institution that issued a statement once the news of the journalist’s death was known.

Reactions to his death

Reactions to Fogel’s death have not been long in coming among his fellow professionals.

«Jean-François had a deep knowledge of and interest in Latin America and Spanish-American culture, he was a good friend of Gabo, whom he met in the early 1970s, he loved journalism and literature, he was concerned about freedom of expression and the quality of democracy in the region and first of all did what we now call digital transformation, of which he became a practical expert, a generous promoter and a clairvoyant guide. He is irreplaceable and we will miss him a lot, but we will always remember him and we will pay him the tribute he deserves at the 11th Gabo Festival in Bogotá,” wrote Jaime Abello Banfi, general director of the Gabo Foundation, after hearing the news.

«The teacher Jean-Francois Fogel leaves us the mark of his great example as an innovative, intellectual and visionary journalist in troubled times. Thank you dear Jean-Francois for your friendship and your lessons in humanism. My solidarity with his family and his friends,” tweeted Carlos F Chamorro, director of the confidential from Nicaragua.

Fogel was a frequent speaker at digital journalism conferences and seminars around the world; and he shone for his generosity in the transmission of knowledge, his transforming vision and unparalleled personal quality, characteristics that journalists from all over the world highlighted along with his enormous professional career.
