Cuban filmmaker Fernando Fraguela wins award at Malaga Festival

The Cuban filmmaker Fernando Fraguela (1991) won the award for Best Documentary of the Malaga Festival with the movie The slaughterhouse.

He jury who gave him the Silver Biznaga, symbol of the festival, was made up of Marta Selva, Amaia Merino and Guillermo G. Peydró

“It is a recognition of this diaspora that we have been forced to go into exile, to leave our country, as is the case in this documentary,” said Fraguela, quoted by the site inverted tree.

The slaughterhouse constitutes the first feature documentary by Fraguela, also co-authored with the filmmaker Jose Luis Aparicio of the documentary “Sueños al pairo” winner of Best Cultural Representation at the Austral Film Festival, Argentina.

“The movie The slaughterhouse It is a self-referential work that I filmed during the pandemic in my neighborhood, in Pinar del Río, so the filming process was not really complicated, because despite the fact that I had not lived there for a few years, that was the place where I grew up. I knew the people who appear in the documentary all my life”, said the director.

Graduated in Film Directing in 2018 from the University of the Arts, Fraguela, a resident of Spain, has exhibited his films in the United States, France, Germany, and Spain as part of festivals and film shows.

The slaughterhouse was produced by Palenque Films, World Cinema Amsterdam GoCuba and the Norwegian Fund for Cuban Film.

In 2022, he produced the works Women who dream of a country and They exist: Resistance of Urban Art in Cuba the latter co-authored with the Cuban graffiti artist Yulier P.

The 26th edition of the Malaga Festival began on March 10 and runs until this Sunday the 19th.

The Best Director Award was won by Sofía Paoli Thorne for Handsome and, and the Audience Award went to the film Remember my Name, by Elena Molina.
