The US sends an official to Colombia, Panama and Brazil with a broad cooperation agenda

Fernández, US Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, will address a cooperation agenda on “global health, food security, supply chain resilience, the environment, and regional economic cooperation in the Western Hemisphere,” with the governments of Panama, Colombia and Brazil


The United States Department of State announced that its Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, Jose W. Fernandezmakes an official visit to Colombia, Panama and Brazil between March 17 and 23, with a broad cooperation agenda in the areas of “global health, food security, resilience of supply chains, the environment and regional economic cooperation in the hemisphere West,” says the official statement.

Fernández will extend the visit made by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, to Washington last February. With Brazil he will address policies relating to the environment, energy, food security, critical minerals, agriculture and other economic issues.

This week, the head of US diplomacy for Latin America, Brian Nichols, expressed that his country is “dismayed” and “disappointed” with Brazil for allowing the docking of two Iranian-flagged ships. At the same time, Brazil announced that it will once again request a visa from Americans, a requirement that the government of Jair Bolsonaro had eliminated.

During his visits, Undersecretary Fernández will meet with government actors, business, civil society and other stakeholders to discuss cooperation on some of the most pressing global challenges, including supply chain resilience, health and food security. , the transition to clean energy and climate change, environmental protection and the promotion of critical and emerging technologies.

It will also apply what the countries of the region have learned from covid-19 in order to work together to prevent the next pandemic. There are also opportunities to promote various country-specific commercial/telecom/digital advocacy objectives.

The Undersecretary intends to deepen collaboration with the Petro government in Colombia regarding key environmental, economic and energy issues. It will host the first high-level ministerial meeting of the Economic and Health Dialogue of the Americas (EHA) to be held in Panama and presented during the Summit of the Americas last June.

In Bogotá, the undersecretary will promote interaction through the Alliance of the Americas for Economic Prosperity to promote a positive economic agenda in the region and discuss joint projects between the US and Colombia aimed at protecting the environment and advances in telecommunications. Likewise, he will listen to opinions from the private sector and civil society on climate change mitigation, the transition to clean energy and labor rights, the press release indicates.
