Government presents scholarship plans for young people

The Dominican Government mobilized this Thursday to the provinces of Santiago Rodríguez and Montecristi in order to present their plans for higher education scholarships to students from those demarcations.

It seeks to convince students in the sixth grade of high school of the need to bet on university degrees that are related to the modes of local production.

“In the case of Montecristi, our role is to sensitize sixth graders, who have not graduated, so that they can select professional and technical careers linked to the development sectors, because that is where we need the critical mass of the youth can enter the workforce,” explained Erick Dorrejo, director of Development Policies for the Border Area, at the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (Mepyd).

plans scholarships focus on applied careers in the areas of ecotourism, industrial consolidation of the agricultural sector, logistics sector (required for the operation of the Port of Manzanillo), the fishing sector and industrial development.

The activity was also attended by Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology (Mescyt) and the National Institute of Professional Technical Training (Infotep).

With the exhibitions in Santiago Rodríguez and Montecristi the Route of the scholarships National for Border Development, which is carried out from the Mepyd in the seven border provinces of the country.

As part of its proposal to students, the career options available to the different universities in the country are identified and they are encouraged to opt for them by filling out the forms that are available on the Mescyt website.

Dozens of students participated in the activity, which served as a stage to make the authorities see some of the demands or shortcomings they have in the area. The remoteness of the rural communities from the urban centers, where the study centers are located, their lack of availability or the lack of resources to pay for tickets to them, were the most common complaints.

According to Dorrejo, the government commitment to students includes seeking alternative centers where students can attend without having to leave their provinces. Also creating the bases so that those who manage to pursue a university degree find work in local companies.

“We want to get students to prepare for careers that they will apply in their provinces, so they don’t have to go to the capital or Santiago”.

This would contribute to stopping the migration that leaves the border provinces with less and less population
