President of the Superior Military Court defends the pacification of the country

The new president of the Superior Military Court (STM), Lieutenant-Brigadier Francisco Joseli Parente Camelo, took office this Thursday afternoon (16) with a speech in defense of the democratic rule of law, the defense of democracy and pacification from the country. The formal session, at the court’s headquarters, in Brasília, was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Rosa Weber, the president of the Federal Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, and authorities.President of the Superior Military Court defends the pacification of the country

“I am convinced, Mr President [Lula], that his greatest challenge will be to pacify Brazil and definitively consolidate democracy in our country. The leaders of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary powers, who honor us with their presence, in a harmonious and independent way, have already given a clear and emphatic demonstration that this is the path and that we will follow it without turning back, without going back”, said Camelo, in reference to the unified institutional reaction of the powers after the coup acts of January 8th.

The STM is the highest body of Military Justice in the country, responsible for prosecuting and judging military crimes provided for in the Military Penal Code. The collegiate is composed of 15 ministers, ten of whom are active military personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force, and five civilians of notorious legal knowledge. All of them are appointed by the President of the Republic and confirmed by the Federal Senate.

In various moments of his speech, the new president of the STM spoke of harmony between the institutions and powers of the Republic. “In my term as president of one of the highest courts of the judiciary in our country, I would like to reaffirm my desire to be able to contribute, under the firm guidance of Justice Rosa Weber, to an increasingly solid integration of all the powers of the Republic” , highlighted.

He also praised President Lula, mentioning the Brazilian president’s commitments to combating social inequalities.
