“We are going to have a meeting with different friendly presidents from Latin America, with Andrés López Obrador (Mexico), Alberto Fernández (Argentina), Xiomara Castro (Honduras), Gustavo Petro (Colombia), and Luis Arce (Bolivia), where one of the issues that we are going to deal with is precisely this,” Boric said.
The Head of State will hold the meeting on March 24 and 25, when the XXVIII edition of the Ibero-American Summit of Santo Domingo is held in the Dominican Republic, where the President will address irregular migration in various Latin American countries. especially the Venezuelan one.
However, the President did not mention in the list of “friendly presidents” the head of state of Peru, Dina Boluarte, with whom he has already had some friction in the past after referring to the current situation in the neighboring country.
Foreign Ministry sources indicated that the non-mention of Peru was because there is full collaboration with that country on the migration issue and the agreements that both countries have signed in this regard are being fulfilled, which is not the case with Bolivia or Venezuela. The absence of the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, in the list of Latin American leaders listed by President Boric, generated noise in the diplomatic sphere and recalled the differences that the Chilean leader had with that country as a result of the political crisis in the middle of last January.
It should be remembered that in the framework of the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Boric lamented the massive deaths registered in Peru after the abrupt departure of Pedro Castillo from power.
“Today, our sister Republic of Peru, with the government under the command of Dina Boluarte, people who go out to march, to demand what they consider fair, end up being shot by those who should defend them. More than 50 people have lost their lives and that makes us should scandalize”, Boric pointed out in the instance.
These statements were not well received at the Andean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since the Peruvian vice chancellor, Ignacio Higueras, contacted the Chilean ambassador in Peru, Óscar Fuentes, to communicate his discomfort.
