Exiled former politicians "lobby" for extension of the mandate of UN Experts for Nicaragua

A group of political prisoners released from the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo continues to denounce, before delegations from various countries accredited to the United Nations Organization (UN), the ordeal to which they were subjected during their captivity and the abuses perpetrated by the Ortega dictatorship against the Nicaraguans.

The delegation, which will remain until March 18 in Geneva, Switzerland; It is made up of opposition leaders and declared stateless by the regime Juan Sebastián Chamorro, Medardo Mairena and Félix Maradiaga, as well as the released politicians Yaritza Mairena and Solange Centeno.

Former presidential candidate Juan Sebastián Chamorro explained that they have met with delegations from various countries “offering testimonies” of violations of the rights of Nicaraguans.

“The violation of the human right to have a nationality has generated special attention,” he highlighted on his Twitter account.

The five opponents, yesterday, Tuesday March 14, met with the permanent representatives of the United States and Argentina to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Michèle Taylor and Federico Villegas respectively.

Biden’s ambassador to the UN said she was “pleased” to have met with three of the 222 political prisoners exiled from Nicaragua. Opponents “were imprisoned for exercising their human rights,” she stressed.

“With our partners, the US will continue to call for the release of political prisoners in Nicaragua and elsewhere,” stressed the diplomat, who maintained that the Biden government continues “to call for the immediate release of Bishop Rolando Álvarez.”

«The Ortega-Murillo regime isolates itself by repressing democracy and not respecting human rights. We encourage the Nicaraguan government to restore civil liberties and democracy to all Nicaraguans. Stripping citizens of their nationality is wrong. Those who bravely fight for democracy in any country will always be its citizens and patriots,” he added.

For their part, the politically released prisoners thanked the Argentine representative to the UN and indicated that they “hope” that the Group of Experts, which was formed during the Villegas presidency at the UN Human Rights Council, “will be extended” to continue investigating the crimes that Ortega has committed against Nicaraguans.

The Nicaraguan delegation is in Geneva, Switzerland; within the framework of the 52 sessions of the UN Human Rights Council, with the aim of meeting with the international community to “advocate for the extension of the mandate of the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua, promote new diplomatic measures against the regime of Ortega and pressure for the release of the 37 political prisoners” who languished in the prisons of the dictatorship.
