waiting for relief
Regarding when this unprecedented heat will end for the month of March, the meteorological agency reported that “towards the weekend we are waiting for the arrival of a cold front that will cause the displacement of the mass of warm and humid air that is now over the center and north of the country.
“We expect relief for Saturday, which will start from the center to the north of the country,” Matías Reinoso, an SMN specialist, explained to Télam.
In turn, he indicated that from this Tuesday until Friday “some isolated phenomena are expected in the provinces of the central strip of the country, such as rains and showers, which may contribute to a moderation of temperatures.”
On this point, he specified: “Although there are still a few days left for the change of air mass, which it will do towards the weekend, starting tomorrow for the city of Buenos Aires and the core area temperatures tend to moderate” .
“The minimums are going to be maintained, but the maximums are going to be moderate. There will be relief during the afternoons,” Reinoso said.
If the forecast is fulfilled, tomorrow the heat wave that has been affecting CABA, the center and north of the province of Buenos Aires, and partially the Litoral and northeast of Córdoba will end tomorrow.
At the country level, this is the tenth heat wave of the 2022-2023 warm season and the second registered in March (from February 28 to March 7).
For a heat wave to be determined, 3 or more days must be recorded with minimum and maximum temperatures above certain thresholds, according to each city.
Although the previous heat wave was interrupted because the minimum temperature on Tuesday the 7th fell below the necessary threshold, the oppressive heat continued and the city of Buenos Aires and its surroundings have been under a red alert since March 2 due to extreme temperatures.
Together with the end of the heat wave, the cessation of the red alert would come and, if the maximum remained around 30 degrees, the warning level would drop to orange or yellow.
Only on Saturday will the greatest relief be felt in CABA with thermal marks that will stop at 26 degrees and on Sunday they will reach 28.
In the middle of a historic March, which during the first 10 days had “extremely high temperatures in the central east of the country”, the SMN maintained orange alerts for the center of the province of Buenos Aires in towns such as Bolívar, Olavarría and Azul; the north of Entre Ríos; and the center and east of Córdoba.
In the case of the orange level, the SMN warns that the temperatures “can be very dangerous”, especially for risk groups; while in the yellow level the effect is mild to moderate and the most affected may be boys and girls, and people over 65 years of age, with chronic diseases.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in force for the Buenos Aires coast and part of the center of the province of Córdoba.
Regarding how the weather will continue next week, Reinoso indicated that “the wind could rotate again towards the north sector and increase the temperature, but the intense heat of these days will not return.”
Finally, the SMN specialist remarked: “We already see the periods of heat waves finished.”
