Karina Rando took office this Monday as the new Minister of Public Health, replacing Dr. Daniel Salinas, who had announced his departure in agreement with President Luis Lacalle Pou.
Rando thanked the president for his confidence in leading the portfolio and Dr. Salinas assured that in these three years all the commitments assumed by the government coalition were fulfilled.
The ceremony took place at the Ministry’s headquarters, attended by the acting Vice President of the Republic, Graciela Bianchi, and the Undersecretary of Public Health, José Luis Satdjian. Also present were the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche; Foreign Relations, Francisco Bustillo; Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos; of Transport and Public Works, José Luis Falero, and the president of the National Administration of Public Education, Robert Silva.
During his speech, Rando referred to the guidelines that will guide his management, all of them enshrined in the 2030 national health objectives.
In this regard, he reported that the legislation that regulates food in educational centers will continue and progress will be made in the regulations on the consumption of foods that are harmful to health. He also said that the work on improving screening for breast, cervix and colon cancer, as well as improving radiotherapeutic treatment, will continue.
In addition, he maintained that progress will be made with the national plan for cerebrovascular accidents, in order to expand its coverage; work will continue towards the elimination of vertical transmission of syphilis and HIV; Uruguay will be included in a project to eradicate hepatitis C disease; work will be done on the regulation of safe and humanized care systems and the development of international cooperation links in health matters will be promoted.
