The Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohaquoted the general director of Carabineros, Ricardo Yanez, after he called on Congress to pass laws to strengthen police work. Both met this Tuesday morning at La Moneda. After the appointment, Yáñez urged “worry about the substance” of his words and pointed out that the Government gives “political support” to the Carabineros.
Let us remember that he summoned the Congress on Monday, after visiting the first corporal Alex Salazar at the Concepción Regional Hospital. A drunk subject ran over the cash in the middle of a procedure, in the early hours of Sunday.

“You can always improve the form of how one manifests or expresses your ideas, but here you have to worry about the substance,” said the general director of the institution at a press point, held in La Moneda.
In addition, he maintained that his statements were made “in a context of great pain.”
“Corporal Alex Salazar said that he constantly manifested his fear and fear of facing a complex situation that could put him in a situation that could be compromising tomorrow, and this is particularly regarding a concern or some fear that he had regarding the performance of his work,” added Yáñez.
He also commented that “the support and political backing we have from the authority, what’s more, all the changes, all the innovations, all the increases that we have had in resources, in the budget (…) have occurred in a year, and that speaks of the support of this authority with the institution”.
“The message was also addressed to my police officers. I want them to know that there is a legislative agenda that the Government has, and particularly the Ministry of the Interior, in which there are a series of initiatives that go and seek to improve these concerns that I raised yesterday”.
The sayings of Yáñez
Director General Yáñez said yesterday: “I invite all parliamentarians, for all the indications, for all the bills that have been sent to Congress, so that once and for all this law comes to light, where the lined field is clear. Where the police officers do not have to doubt, where the police officers are not afraid of having to face criminals and make use of all the elements that the law gives them,” said Yáñez.
“Enough is enough. If we want to have a safe country and live in peace, let’s hand over the conditions, let’s hand over the tools,” he continued.
“Thus, let’s work together, so that the regulations and laws provide enough tools so that the police officer can go to work calmly, and can be sure that what he is going to do will not be questioned, not even for the Public Prosecutor’s Office, nor by the authorities, nor by anyone, but that they know that they are complying with the law,” emphasized Yáñez.
Monsalve: “I think not” is part of his duties
Earlier, the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, addressed the summons of Yáñez to Congress. In this regard, he pointed out that he is not part of his functions.
“I wonder if it is good for the police institutions, their highest representatives in this case the General Director of Carabineros, to question other State Powers,” he said in conversation with Radio Universe.
“I wonder if it is part of his duties and I think not, because he has open channels with the government, he can come to speak with the Undersecretary of the Interior when he deems it appropriate and he knows it, and he can also speak with the Minister of the Interior, when she deems it appropriate,” he added.
