Matte Capdevila declared merchandise for a lower value than it actually carried. Given this, the National Customs Service filed a complaint against him and requests 5 years in prison, in addition to a fine of $148 million.
Among the products not declared by Pilar Matte are a yellow gold bracelet with diamonds, a white gold ring with sapphires, and a yellow gold ring with white diamonds. All valued at US$40,697 and not US$526 as the businessman’s daughter declared when entering Chile from the United States.
The public service described at the end of June of last year in the judicial action that “the merchandise was not declared, being irregularly admitted to our country, not also making the payment of the respective taxes, in particular the special or additional tax” .
The defendant’s defense, led by lawyer Rodrigo González Holmes, assured that such a situation was “an error without bad faith.”
It is worth mentioning that among Pilar Matte’s luggage there was even a dedication letter from the luxury jewelry designer Suzanne Kalan. And in addition, five sets of glasses by designer Mario Luca Goust were found, valued at about $700,000 and not just one, as the businessman’s daughter declared.
