The mining strike in Bajo Cauca and Northeast Antioqueño has had a strong impact on this region of the country. The blockades generated shortages of food and medical supplies in the area. Among the effects are also the difficulties to continue operations in the gold mines in the region.
According to the Colombian Mining Association (ACM), 12 legal mining companies have seen operations affected. This not only in Antioquia but also in Córdoba. According to the Association, the blockade of land and river routes has impeded the access of workers.
This led the alluvial gold extraction company Mineros to suspend its operations in the area to safeguard its workers and contractors. They stressed that work would be resumed as soon as possible, although they warned that “An extension of this suspension could negatively impact the Company’s ability to meet its production.”

Until now, the Government has advanced dialogue tables in the region with the protesters. However, President Gustavo Petro has indicated that there are indications that the Clan del Golfo is involved in the public order situation.
He warned that they would continue to destroy dredges that allow the financing of illegal groups in this area.
