A traffic accident between an ambulance and two vehicles leaves 12 injured in Villa Clara

At least 12 injured, including a minor, was the result of a traffic accident that occurred this Sunday on the highway to Sagua la Grande and Circunvalación, in Villa Clara, in which an ambulance from the Integral Service was involved. According to testimonies from some witnesses, Elena Hernández Sosa, 80, was transported in the ambulance due to asthmatic problems. The woman was admitted to the Celestino Hernández hospital and she does not present any injuries.

Elena was accompanied by Ania Ramírez Hernández, 50, who was taken from the ambulance after the crash. According to data offered by the official communicator Henry Omar Pérez, the woman presents a cranial trauma and a small spill. Pérez underwent exploratory abdominal surgery.

The ambulance driver, identified as Julio Ernesto González Martínez, 28, underwent surgical treatment and remains admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

The other injured came in two vehicles, a Peugeot and a Moskovich. Yuniel Collazo Méndez, 33, presented several rib fractures, for which he was admitted for observation.

Alexander Castillo Quintana (49 years old), Félix Luis Hernández Hernández (38), Yilka Manso Hernández (45), José Luis Vega Pérez (54), the doctor José Carlos Pérez (53), the nurse Randi Alonso Pedrasa (41) and Noelia Hernández Díaz (56), are under observation but out of danger. The name of the minor was omitted but it was specified that he is out of danger.

Agents from the Ministry of the Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces appeared at the scene, posted on his Facebook account Ian Colina, who stressed that the Villa Clara Provincial Director of Health, Dr. Juan José Pulido López, led the rescue actions at the site.

Regarding the causes of the accident, it was the users who denounced that after 5 pm and on weekends “traffic lights do not work.” Yany Portal Carvajal wrote: “At five o’clock is when there is more traffic and not even to save money, because they work intermittently.”

Another user identified as Pablo Ce Ka pointed out that “apparently there was a malfunction of the traffic lights and indiscipline on the road.” He specified that the population has been observing that “in the afternoons and on Sundays they leave the traffic lights flashing yellow and others red, right at the most dangerous intersection in Santa Clara.”

A total of 700 people lost their lives in Cuba in traffic accidents in 2022, which represents an increase of 18% compared to those who died from this cause in 2021 (589).

The Island registered 9,848 claims last year, an increase of 17% compared to 2021, a year of lower mobility due to measures to mitigate covid-19 infections, informed the head of the specialized body of Traffic of the General Directorate of the Police, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez.
