The PIT-CNT defined a strike against the pension reform

Meeting on March 9, the Expanded National Representative Table of the PITCNT resolved to establish the date of a strike that had already been decided since February. In the previous edition it had been resolved to stop when the project was voted on in the plenary session of the chamber, however on this occasion it was decided to stop the day the parliamentary discussion began in its corresponding commission, indicates the APU portal (Association of Press Uruguaya), which integrates EL ECO.

According to the first work schedule, presented by the National Party (PN), the discussion would begin on March 23 in the “Special Commission for the treatment of the bill creating the Common Pension System” of the Chamber of Deputies, this is why the PIT-CNT resolves an action plan in rejection of the pension reform that reached its highest point on that day.

Each union will define, according to the reality of its sector, how to implement the strike, whether to do it for 24 hours or starting earlier in the morning, in accordance with the principles of autonomy that govern the convention.

Informative tents were planned in all departments, in the case of Montevideo it will be held in Chicago’s Plaza Mártires, also known as May 1st, and will be installed on Monday, March 13. There will be workshops, talks and cultural activities every day. Likewise, the deputies of all the parties in each department will be invited to attend the tents of their respective localities, as a face-to-face meeting with the citizens. A mass mobilization with the support of the Intersocial is also expected to go to the Legislative Palace on the day of the strike. It is promoted to start at 9 a.m. on Thursday, without a defined end, it will be determined by a meeting of the Representative Board that will be held during the day, and that could return to work positions, extend it until the end of the day or for more days as deemed appropriate. According to sources within the union movement, the date of the strike resolved by the PIT-CNT could be modified by its Executive Secretariat, by virtue of the fact that the Agenda of the Chamber of Deputies is modified, only in case of reliable proof of this situation. , the partial general strike would be without effect, adjusting it for another day. According to the member of the secretariat, Sergio Sommaruga, it was also approved that if the reform were approved, technical advisory consultations would be initiated to establish the feasibility of challenging the project through constitutional reform.

The main demands and alternatives of the popular movement are aligned with the non-increase in the retirement age, the elimination of the AFAP, and the constitution of a true progressiveness between the retirement contributions made by workers, and those made by employers, since Due to their relative weight, the latter contribute less through various mechanisms and provisions.

Meanwhile in the Broad Front (FA) they have doubts that the calendar presented by the PN can be fulfilled. The differences within the government coalition, as well as the high number of delegations to be received make this unlikely to happen.
