This Saturday, February 5, the Broad Front will be 51 years old. The act of celebration that would take place in the afternoon at the Parque Rodó Music Pavilion, where Fernando Pereira would give a speech as the new president of the political force, was suspended due to bad weather warnings.

In addition to the oratory part by Pereira, the performance of Ana Prada and the murga Araca la Cana was also planned.

In any case, the FA reported that house-to-house “neighbourhoods” will be carried out in different parts of Montevideo, to explain the reasons why 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) should be annulled, which will be submitted for consideration by the citizenship in the act of referendum on March 27.

Details

The neighborhoods will be held this Saturday according to the following details: Bella Italia (Florencia and Rambla Blanco Acevedo), from 9:30 am. La Teja (Plaza Lafone) at 10 am. Redoubt (Enrique Martínez and Grito de Ascencio) at 10 am. Diving (Rivera and Santiago Rivas) at 10 am. New Paris (Dr. Carlos María de Pena and Yugoeslavia) at 5:00 p.m., and Cerrito (Nueva Troya and General Flores) at 6:00 p.m.

The Broad Front was founded on February 5, 1971. At that time it was made up of the following parties: Socialist (led by José Pedro Cardoso), Communist (Rodney Arismendi) and Christian Democrat (Juan Pablo Terra), and other minor sectors of the left.

White dissident groups also joined the incipient coalition, such as: the Popular Front Ampist Movement of Francisco Rodríguez Camusso and Patria Grande, of Enrique Erro; and colorados (Pregón Movement of Alba Roballo, and For the Government of the People of Zelmar Michelini and Hugo Batalla).

It also had the participation of independent citizens, such as Líber Seregni and Víctor Licandro (both of Batllista extraction), and Julio Castro (teacher and deputy director of the newspaper Marcha).

For the national elections of 1971, the Broad Front presented the presidential formula made up of: Líber Seregni for the Presidency of the Republic and Juan José Crottogini as a candidate for the vice presidency.

After the coup d’état of June 27, 1973, the Broad Front was banned and many of its members imprisoned and tortured.
