Báez: Nicaraguans thank Pope Francis for "his courageous voice" in the face of the Ortega dictatorship

Monsignor Silvio Baezauxiliary bishop of Managua, thanked this Sunday the Pope Francisco for his support of the Nicaraguan people and Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, a prisoner of conscience in Nicaragua.

From Saint Agatha Church in Miami, United States, the bishop asked to offer the mass in thanksgiving for the 10 years of Pope Francis’ pontificate that will be fulfilled on Monday, March 13.

«The pope of mercy who wanted to bring new air to the Church. Misunderstood and attacked as Jesus was, but I believe that Catholics should give infinite thanks to God for Pope Francis. It is a gift from God to the Church and to humanity,” the prelate told the parishioners.

He added that Nicaraguans especially thank the Supreme Pontiff for “his courageous voice, his voice as a prophet, who has called the Sandinista dictatorship of Nicaragua for what they are: Hitlerites, communists, deranged and guarangos.”

In a recent interview, the highest representative of the Catholic Church called the Ortega regime a “rude dictatorship” and pointed out that the ruler of the country has an “imbalance”.

“Who is missing by the Sandinista dictatorship of (Daniel) Ortega and (Rosario) Murillo in Nicaragua. We don’t know where Monsignor Rolando is and we don’t know what situation he is in. I have asked the Church of the whole world on the networks to raise its voice in prayer and in denunciation of Rolando,” Báez said.

“I confess that I am very worried about my brother, especially about the latest events that have occurred,” added the bishop in exile, after it became known that the regime of Ortega raises the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Vatican.

The Bishop of Matagalpa is “a successor of the apostles, a just man. He is innocent. A prophet of God. He deserves to be in the midst of his people and his people deserve to have his pastor. May the Lord give Rolando strength, may he give him good health and hope and may our prayers reach God for him because we want him free, and soon,” he said.
