“Deep sadness at the death of my dear companion Ivonne Passada. Her departure leaves a great void in politics and social activism, but her legacy will live on in the memory of those who had the good fortune to know her. Goodbye mate!” This is how the Broad Front fired one of its most prominent and visible co-religionists in recent years.

The Popular Participation Movement (MPP) announced the death of Ivonne Passada, a former Frente Amplista senator at the age of 66. The political group highlighted her career and her role as the second president of the Chamber of Deputies in the history of Uruguay.

Born in Montevideo in 1956, Passada has been part of the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional (MLN) since 1985 and has been in the national leadership of the MPP since 2002. She represented Montevideo in the Chamber of Deputies between 2005 and 2015, and in 2010 she assumed the presidency of the House of Representatives, becoming one of the three women in history to have presided over the chamber.

The MPP highlighted the legacy of Passada, which was characterized by promoting dialogue and negotiation as tools to deal with political tension. The former senator also stood out for her educational vocationhis work in the reorganization of the union of the UTU and his participation in the neighborhood commissions of Malvín Norte.

The communiqué of the leftist group stresses the importance that Passada gave to the participation of women and all minorities in politics and in decision making. Politicians from all parties expressed their condolences on social networks after hearing the news of the death of the Frente Amplista leader.

Different national political figures said goodbye to Passada, recognizing their work, impetus and capacity for dialogue. “I deeply regret the death of former legislator Ivonne Passada, a great politician, legislator, woman of struggle, committed to her party and her country. To her family, friends and colleagues from @Frente_Amplio my most sincere condolences. RIP”, wrote the Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón.

“With Ivonne Passada we share many parliamentary days, and we work together in the Defense Commission. She adversary of frank dialogue and calm voice. To her family and colleagues from @Frente_Amplio and from @ MPP609 my solidarity. QEPD”, wrote the Minister of National Defense, Javier García.

For his part, the former mayor of Montevideo, Christian Di Candia, stated: “My soul is totally broken. Iron partner and true friend. You gave us all much, much more than love… thank you thank you thank you… See you at the next sunset. Until tomorrow’s victory Ivoneta, wait for me with a rum”.
