Uncertainty between university students and UCAN workers, outlawed and confiscated by the regime

Uncertainty between university students and UCAN workers, outlawed and confiscated by the regime

In western Nicaragua, the more than 1,500 students at the Autonomous Christian University of Nicaragua (UCAN), canceled by the Ortega and Murillo regime, do not know what will happen to their careers. Another group that experiences uncertainty is the administrative staff, who do not know what will happen to their jobs.

For now, students continue to attend classes both at the new building, located on the road to Lechecuagos, and at the Faculty of Medicine in the center of the city of León and Chinandega. “Here nobody explains anything, because nobody knows anything,” said a student.

Kenia García, a medical student, was concerned about the situation that the university is going through. She said that most of her college students are already doing their professional internships in hospitals, private clinics, pharmacies and laboratories.

“We don’t know what will happen to our career. They told us to keep coming to class and that they would call us to a meeting later. They say they are looking at the situation with their lawyer, but that is a waste of time because they are facing the same government that is controlling everything,” said the university student.

“We already know who wants to confiscate the country and repeat ideological phrases. Just look at the fact that they have just published that they are taking away their legal status and today they are already taking away all the facilities. We already know that what this government is looking for is to monopolize all private education, because it is not convenient for them that young people think differently”, criticized another student from the Faculty of Design.

They shut up and pretend normality

The reaction of the parents has not been long in coming. They have requested a pronouncement from the university regarding the measure taken by the Ortega government against their children’s house of studies.

Rosmari García, mother of a family, said that she did not understand why the Rectory is still silent and pretending that everything is normal. She asked that the university speak out, because “those who are under threat of losing everything” are the students.

«As a mother I need to know what will happen to my daughter who graduated from this university, they cannot throw away six years of study and effort of a student and her mother. Why so silence? I already paid the 550 dollars, half that they asked for to do their thesis knowing that the government had removed the price of 1,200 dollars for the degree and the thesis,” another mother said angrily.

“One year and they have not had an answer, they are fresh and now they are taking away their legal status and they continue in silence, we need an answer for our children who studied and study here,” he added.

“Sadly, the one affected is always the people. Unfortunately, this government confiscates everything, destroys everything they touch. There it is for those who say that education is free, nothing is free, they harm those who do make an effort to pay their children a quality education,” said the mother of a student, Paula Altamirano.

meeting announced

It was learned that the Rectory of the illegalized university will convene an assembly in the coming days to provide details of the current situation of workers and students from the faculties of medicine, industrial engineering, hospitality, customs, architecture, civil engineering, design , among other.

A source who works in the administrative area said, under anonymity, that they are preparing the liquidation of 250 administrative, teaching, cleaning and security workers because the government will put its own trusted personnel, that is, “its militants” to work in University.

The source left between seeing that the buildings and all the university real estate was confiscated by the government. And that the students who continue at said university will continue to pay their fees.

“Right now the rector’s hands are tied. Her husband is currently fighting cancer in a clinic in Costa Rica and we believe that it is an oversight from the government, because it is a Catholic university and because of the support that medical students gave to young people injured during the 2018 protests. It’s revenge, “said the source.

servants behind rectory

It was unofficially known that a member of the Central de Trabajadores de la Salud (Fetsalud) directed by the president of the National Assembly Gustavo Porras, could be the one in charge of the rectory of the headquarters in Chinandega, and León, where the demand is major in the college of nursing, pharmacy, and medical technology.

The new facilities of the UCAN university campus are valued at more than 18 million dollars, one of the largest educational investments in the region built in seven years, in an extension of 38 blocks for the advancement of higher education of “Christian and Catholic inspiration. The higher education center has an enrollment of 6,375 students in 25 majors in its six locations nationwide and has been serving the university community in the country for 26 years.
