García Luna has not shown interest in being a cooperating witness, says his defense

Genaro García Luna, who was in charge of the fight against drug trafficking during the Calderón administration (2006-2012), was found guilty in February by a New York court of receiving bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel.

After the jury shared their verdict, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Felipe Calderón should say if he knew what his Secretary of Public Safety was doing.

“What didn’t the president know?” López Obrador asked in his daily conference, where he assured that the sentence is not against his country but against the actions of the governments that preceded him.

After the verdict was announced in February, Calderón released a statement on his Twitter account in which he assured that in his administration he complied and enforced the law and the Constitution, and that the fight for the safety of Mexicans was not the responsibility of one person. , but also of the military, police and civil servants.

At the New York trial, federal prosecutors said Garcia Luna accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the cartel once led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in exchange for protection from arrest, safe-conduct for cocaine shipments and leads on police operations.

In addition to Calderón’s Secretary of Public Security, the convicted man was director of the Federal Investigation Agency during the mandate of Vicente Fox (2000-2006).
