Toll on the waterway: Abdo takes a Paraguayan position and Fernández promises to evaluate

The President of the Republic, Mario Abdo Benítez, held a working meeting in Buenos Aires today with his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández. The meeting served to discuss the bilateral and regional agenda, as well as the current situation of Mercosur, challenges for 2023 and issues related to the efficiency of navigability in the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway.

The report from the Argentine Foreign Ministry indicates that both presidents debated the response given by the bloc’s member countries during 2022 to the global demands for products that MERCOSUR was able to export to the entire world, based on the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine and the impact on Latin America in terms of food and energy.

On this point, the leaders ratified the need to give even more dynamism to regional and extra-regional trade.

They also highlighted the negotiations that the block is moving forward with the European Union to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, that contemplates the three dimensions of sustainable, economic, social and environmental development, as a framework for a deepening of the bi-regional association.

About, Abdo Benítez presented the position of Paraguay regarding the Argentine intention to apply a toll on the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway, and the need to adjust transit within the framework of the 1992 Santa Cruz de la Sierra Agreement on Fluvial Transport for the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway.

For his part, Alberto Fernández conveyed Argentina’s willingness to continue evaluating the issue in the institutional sphere of the Paraguay – Paraná Waterway Agreement and asked Paraguay to submit a proposal leading to a satisfactory solution for all parties.
