Lacalle Pou explained why Azucena Arbeleche said that Uruguay is "boring"

In front of hundreds of investors, national and foreign, at the summit Kick Off 2023the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, explained what the Minister of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche, meant when she told businessmen that Uruguay is “boring” (boring, in English).

Recently the minister was invited to São Paulo to speak with a group of investors about Uruguay as a destination to invest, there “he spoke in English and said that Uruguay is boring,” said Lacalle Pou, who explained that the concept is understood differently between those who speak Spanish and those who are English speakers. “In English it’s not boring that you get bored in Uruguay. The meaning of that is boring because it’s predictable. Uruguay is predictable“, he explained.

With that, he told finance specialists that despite the fact that the political parties in charge of government have changed in Uruguay, “it never occurred to any of them to have a refoundational head. And that is fundamental.”

At Enjoy Punta del Este, national and foreign investors met for the fifth edition of the Kick Off world summit, organized by LATAM ConsultUs. Coffee & Business He participated in the event that had a first day full of conferences on commodities, real estate, inflation and technology; Lacalle Pou’s speech was given at the closing of the event.

Uruguay like a tree

The president made an analogy between the country and a tree. In Uruguay, “the roots are well buried, the trunk is firm, the sap that runs inside, which is democracy, is healthy and each government does the pruning in the way it foresees; but the tree is always the same,” held. With that, he referred to the “pure, classic and traditional” separation of powers and stressed: “political power does not interfere with the Judiciary.” This last sentence provoked an ovation from those present in the auditorium.

Lacalle Pou thanked the different players in the financial sector for their participation, calling them to have confidence in Uruguay as a place to investbecause “the balances between the Executive Power and the Legislative Power are very well done, the Constitution is very guaranteeing and we have a rare custom: we respect the constitution, the laws and the contracts,” he said.
