Sernapesca confirms a new case of bird flu in a penguin found in Coquimbo

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) released a new report due to the situation of highly pathogenic avian influence (HPAI) in marine species in the country. Thus, they confirmed a new case of the flu.

As explained by the National Deputy Director of Sernapesca, Esteban Donoso, “after the laboratory results of the sampling of a penguin stranded on Morrillos beach in Coquimbo, we received notification of a new positive case.”

“This is an adult male Humboldt penguin that stranded alive with symptoms associated with avian influenza, for which the joint procedure with the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) began,” he added.

The agency reported that the epidemiological situation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) by H5 subtype of Eurasian lineage “has continued to spread.” In this way, there are already four regions that have registered cases of marine fauna protected by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Law with positivity for avian influenza.

“To date we have a chungungo that tested positive in Arica, a sea lion and a penguin in Tarapacá. Two sea lions and two penguins in Antofagasta, and now a penguin in Coquimbo. A total of eight confirmed positive cases out of a total of 137 samples taken from mammals and penguins in the country”, they concluded from Sernapesca.
