Municipality removes the construction license from Urkupamba

The inhabitants of the slopes of Pichincha have demonstrated against the Urkupamba ash pit project. They fear it could cause floods.

The Municipality of Quito reported this Friday, February 4, 2022 that the urban planning metropolitan license of the Urkupamba Cenizario Project was without effect.

The license it was canceled in June 2021 and granted again on June 21, 2021.

The Municipality’s statement indicates that “in 2019 the Secretary of the Environment of the Municipality of Quito determined that the location of the aforementioned project was in an ecological protection zone and that no type of project could be developed.”

The document adds that, despite this, “the former mayor Jorge Yunda broke the rule and granted the permissions for its development, to the detriment of the residents of the area and the protective forest, which constituted an attack on the security of the city of Quito”.

Hours before the statement, in the area where it was intended to build the ashes (Pichincha slopes), the collective ‘Barrios Unidos por el Buen Vivir’ held a sit-in calling for the cancellation building permit.

The group is confirmed by 10 neighborhoods, those of the Belisario Quevedo parish, where the project is located. (AVV)
