The lack of traffic lights due to a blackout causes an accident in Havana

A traffic accident in Havana this Tuesday left two people slightly injured, the drivers of the cars that collided at the intersection of 17th Street with Avenida de los Presidentes, or G Street, in El Vedado.

In a blackout and without the traffic lights working, one of them, who was traveling through G with a white Volkswagen, rammed an orange Polski Fiat 126 that was going on 17 and was left on its side on the road. Both of them, over sixty years old, came out unharmed but very nervous.

As this newspaper testified, the driver of the orange was left bloody, nailing his own glasses, and the one in white was limping. The first was treated on the spot by a nurse who was a friend of her family. The second, a native of Ciego de Ávila, came from the nearby Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, from a medical appointment where they reviewed the open-heart operation that he recently underwent.

Either one suffered double. That of the Polski, due to the difficulties in finding spare parts for that model of car that was introduced to the Island in the days of trade with the communist countries of Eastern Europe. The one in Ciego de Ávila, due to the difficulty in returning to his province given the lack of transportation.

“The main reason was the blackout,” said one of the many onlookers who crowded around the scene, “but they were also negligent, one for not respecting G’s preference and the other for not slowing down and stopping.”

"The main reason was the blackout"opined one of the many onlookers who crowded the scene, "but they also had their negligence". (14 and a half)
