Mexico will seek to go to a panel if there is no agreement with the US on transgenic corn

Mexico will seek to go to a panel if there is no agreement with the US on transgenic corn

The president said that while this study is taking place, the country prohibits the consumption of transgenic corn for people, only for consumption by animals, such as pigs.

“If there is no understanding, we go to the panel,” he said.

The United States requested on Monday consultations on Mexico’s policy to limit the use of genetically modified corn and other agricultural biotechnology products, assuring that it damages a million-dollar trade and the right of its producers to access the Mexican market, established in the TMEC.

The technical consultations are the first step toward a dispute settlement panel under the trade deal, which could ultimately lead to retaliatory tariffs.

The National Agricultural Council (CNA) issued a statement on Monday night in which it stressed that the study of corn is a measure, supported by Chapter 9 of the T-MEC, which is not of a contentious nature, but of an exchange of information.
