The US Coast Guard Service (SGC) handed over a group of rafters the day before – 54 men, 20 women and one minor, the majority residing in the provinces of Matanzas and Granma – to the Cuban authorities through the Port of Orozco.

These people, without documentation, had participated in six illegal departures from the country by sea and were later intercepted by the US Coast Guard, the note indicated.

One of those now returned is under arrest “for being suspected of committing serious criminal acts, which were investigated prior to his departure.”

He also specified that with this operation – number 25 of the US Coast Guard Service in 2022 – there are a total of 1,918 Cuban rafters who have returned.

One of those now returned is under arrest “for being allegedly committing serious criminal acts, which were investigated prior to his departure,” he added.

Last week other groups of irregular migrants were deported by the governments of Mexico (22 people), the Bahamas (128) and the United States (41).

The Government of Cuba insists that it maintains its commitment “with a regular, safe and orderly migration” and insists on “the danger and risk conditions for life that illegal departures from the country by sea represent.”

In addition to the Bahamas, Mexico and the United States, migrants from the Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic have also been deported to Cuba so far this year.

In addition to the Bahamas, Mexico and the US, migrants from the Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic have also been deported to Cuba so far this year.

In the case of the United States, since last October 1, US Coast Guard crews have intercepted more than 5,740 Cubans, a high number compared to previous years.

The Government of Washington implemented at the beginning of 2023 a policy to welcome 30,000 migrants per month from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua. In parallel, it will immediately expel migrants from those countries who try to cross the southern border into its territory irregularly to Mexico.

Mexico, for its part, agreed to admit 30,000 migrants a month who are sent from US territory.
