Lasso receives support from the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Panama before impeachment

Quito (EFE).- The governments of Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic expressed this Monday their support for the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, in the face of the impeachment process for his censorship that opened on Saturday the National Assembly (Parliament), of opposition majority.

The support was reflected in a statement issued from Quito, where the sixth summit of the Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD) was held this Monday, made up of the four countries.

In that document, the governments of Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic ratified their commitment to the Inter-American Democratic Charter and reiterated their “firm support” for democracy in Ecuador and the government of President Guillermo Lasso.

They recalled that Lasso was “democratically elected according to the Ecuadorian Constitution and laws for the period from May 24, 2021 to May 24, 2025.”

“Recent events in that sister republic that tend to destabilize a government elected by the popular will are causing concern,” they said in the statement.

“We make a respectful and fraternal call to the different social and political actors in Ecuador so that the constitutional period of the government is guaranteed and the country can continue the normal democratic development,” they concluded.

In addition to Lasso, the presidents of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, and the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, as well as the vice president of Panama, José Carrizo, participated in the ADD summit on Monday.

The National Assembly gave the green light on Saturday to initiate a process of impeachment against Lasso for alleged crimes against State security and omission in crimes against public administration, after revealing an alleged corruption plot in public companies in which his brother-in-law appears , the businessman Danilo Carrera.

There is also another businessman, Rubén Cherres, a person close to the ruling party who recently became the subject of a police investigation for alleged links to a drug trafficking network, according to a report by the Police anti-drug division that was archived more than a year ago. anus.

Any request for impeachment must first be reviewed by the Constitutional Court to assess whether the request is duly substantiated, after the report recommending impeachment, approved by a majority with votes from correísmo and the Pachakutik indigenous movement, along with other opposition forces. .

Lasso already saved by a few votes in the National Assembly a motion of no confidence against him last June, in the midst of the protests led by the indigenous movement against the high cost of living and his economic policy, which paralyzed a good part of the country. for 18 days. EFE
