Low oil sales and other causes of the drop in exports

The Colombian exports, which had been on the rise, registered a fall of 2.8% for the month of January, in relation to the same period of time in 2022, mainly compromised by the 4.5% drop in external sales of the fuel group.

This was confirmed by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane), which recorded that the country’s external sales were US$3,694.9 million for the first month of the year and accumulate a total of US$57,152 in the last 12 months.

When making a breakdown by categories, for this month, exports of fuels and products from the extractive industries participated with 54.6% of the total value of external sales. Additionally, this item billed US$2,017 million, presenting a decrease of 4.5% compared to January of the previous year.

According to the entity this behavior was mainly explained by the decrease in oil sales, as well as products derived from petroleum and related products, which registered -19.2%. These factors contributed -11.6 percentage points to the group variation.

during january 11,378 million barrels of crude oil were exported, a 17.4% drop compared to the same month in 2022.

On the other hand, the manufacturing sector participated with 18.7% of total external sales, recording US$691.5 million. This division presented a positive variation of 0.1%, compared to the same period of 2022.

El Dane indicated that the behavior was explained by the increase in sales of manufactured items, classified mainly sAccording to the material, which registered 24.0%, and contributed 7.4 percentage points to the variation.

However, foreign sales of agricultural products, food and beverages registered 19.9% ​​of total exports, with a turnover of US$736.1 million. Also, ppresented a drop of -9.9%, compared to January 2022, due to the decrease in coffee exports without roasting, decaffeinated or not; coffee shell and husk with a variation of -24.8%. This behavior in the figure contributed negatively with 9.8 percentage points to the figure registered in the month.

In the month of January the group of other sectors weighed 6.8% in all international sales. However, compared to January 2022, the increase in exports from the other sectors group registered an increase of 37.0%, which was mainly explained by the sales of non-monetary gold that contributed 36.8 percentage points to the variation of the cluster.

According to the information provided in the foreign trade document of the Dane, the main export destination for the month of January was the United States, with 22.9% participation in the total value exported. Next is Panama, which registered a 9.9% share, as well as China, which consolidated itself as the third country to which most exports are made, with 7.2% cooperation. For the Asian giant, sales this month represented growth that was explained by higher sales of crude oils. The data for 2022 was 4.1%.

The Netherlands positioned itself as the fourth country with the most sales abroad, with a share of 6.2%. I continue with Mexico (4.1%), Brazil (3.5%), Spain (3.5%) and other countries with 42.5%. However, it should be remembered that one of the products that is most traded abroad is coffee, so of the US$239.7 million declared in January 2023; 67.3% embarked in the same month and 32.7% in December 2022.
