Ministers Paganini and Albuquerque met for two days in Montevideo, with the aim of strengthening energy integration between the two countries.
After the work meetings, a joint declaration was issued expressing the need to “deepen electrical integration and binational cooperation towards the second energy transition.”
In this sense, the parties resolved to form working groups that will address different issues, including: “the review of existing rules in order to deepen the exchange of electricity surpluses, which would benefit both countries.”
Likewise, “common strategic issues, such as the development of renewable energies and the hydrogen economy, and the development of charger corridors to facilitate electric mobility” were discussed.
“The technical work will begin immediately, with a view to obtaining the first results in the first half of 2022,” the statement ensures.

Paganini expressed that the “uninterrupted collaboration in recent months to mutually meet energy needs and the challenges of the climate situation have shown that integration is something valuable and strengthens relations.”
“Both Uruguay and Brazil have taken many steps forward in the development of our wind and photovoltaic potential, and now we have the opportunity to be pioneers in the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives,” said the Secretary of State.
For his part, Albuquerque highlighted the motivation of the parties for the success of the negotiations and for the strengthening of the ties that unite Brazil and Uruguay, especially in the energy sector, fundamental for the development of both societies”.
