AFP fund withdrawal projects will go to the pension system reform working group

All bills linked to the Peruvian pension system, including those that seek to approve a seventh withdrawal of funds from members of the will be analyzed by the working group created in the Economic Commission of the Congress of the Republic, in charge of proposing a comprehensive reform of pensions in the country.

These requests are made despite the fact that the Minister of Economy and Finance, Alex Contreras, has publicly said that the withdrawals of funds from the AFPs are the worst measure that can be taken because it is not the time because we are no longer in a pandemic and Furthermore, because it will harm the debt capacity of the State and the future pensions of affiliates.

The head of the Economy even expressly asked the congressmen to suspend any initiative to withdraw AFP funds and devote all efforts to making a comprehensive reform of the Peruvian pension system.

technical entities

At the request of both parliamentarians, the president of the commission, Rosangella Barbarán, was clear in explaining that this issue is delicate and that technical entities will be summoned to give their opinion on each bill, because it is about be responsible in these matters.

“There are several bills on requesting withdrawals. We are requesting the opinions of the technical entities, but we are also going to summon the specialists because we want to attend to this demand that is being made, but respecting it technically,” Barbarán said.

In this regard, the president of the commission’s reform working group, parliamentarian Jorge Montoya, said that the issue of pensions should be sorted out, not approving isolated projects, but that work should be done on a comprehensive reform that benefits all Peruvians.

“We have a work table that I coordinate. We have been working for two months and this is not an immediate solution, projects related to pensions cannot be approved because this will never change. It is going to be the never-ending story and we are not going to be able to present a project that really has the effect that it should have for all pensioners and for those who are not currently pensioners in the country. So, Madam President, I would ask you that everything that arrives regarding pensions be referred to the reform working group, to have it as input and to be able to continue with the work, otherwise everything we are doing is in vain and all the effort will be lost deployed so far”Montoya said.

The president of the Economic Commission agreed to Montoya’s request and specified that all pension bills will be sent to the pension system reform working group to be worked on technically

“The Economic Commission has not yet passed any bill on pensions because the ideal is that, since it is such a sensitive issue, it should be worked on technically. So, as we have done before, all the related projects are being sent to you. We appreciate the work you are doing and we urge congressmen to actively participate in the meetings that are being called by your reform group.”Barbaran concluded.
