The Board of Directors of the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Economic Sciences (FCEA), of the University of the Republic (UDELAR), issued a statement in the last few hours confirming that the former senator of the Broad Front, Daniel Oleskercan publicly boast that he is an economist, since has higher education than bachelor’s degree.
In a three-point statement, the FCEA first begins by explaining that the title of “economist”, as such, is not issued from that faculty, except for graduates from the 1980 curriculum. However, the term is normally used to mention any person who has academic training or specialization in the economic area, either with a degree or a postgraduate degree.
As for Olesker, he is not a graduate of that state university because he had to interrupt his academic training due to the arrival of the military dictatorship, for which he was illegally persecuted and imprisoned. During that time, the repressors massively fired teachers, censored the educational process, and orchestrated widespread persecution.
Olesker was not allowed to continue his studies when he was released from prison, but he was able to use what he had studied up to that point to pursue a master’s degree at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. She was able to finish this degree successfully and with all the requirements. There she obtained a Master’s degree in Economics in 1985.
Consequently, Daniel Olesker has a postgraduate education superior to his undergraduate education.
Olesker as a professor at UDELAR
The last point of the statement establishes that, in order to be a UDELAR teacher, it is not necessary to have graduated from that teaching house, since teaching positions are accessed by open competitive examination and merits.
Olesker, with his duly accredited academic training in Belgium and his long career in the Department of Economics at UDELAR, have earned him the position of Full Professor, which allows him to develop teaching activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The CFEA ended the statement by inviting people who also saw their studies interrupted by the dictatorship to formalize those they have done in other countries or universities, in order to repair the injustice committed.
