Santo Domingo.- The 86th anniversary of the birth of José Francisco Peña Gómez, considered the most important leader of the masses in the country, will be celebrated this Sunday with a caravan that will leave at 6:00 in the morning from the Plaza de la Bandera, in the capital, to Loma del Flaco, in Valverde, Mao, where a monument was built in his honor.
Peña Gómez was born on March 6, 1937, in Loma del Flaco and died on May 10, 1998, in Santo Domingo.
The tribute is called “From moreno to moreno, gratitude obliges”, it was organized by the Maximiliano Gómez Foundation, an organization founded to spread political thought and the fight and contributions for the best interests of the country of El Moreno, extinct leader of the Movement Popular Dominican (MPD).
“Remembering Peña Gómez is a celebration of the friendship and example built between Peña Gómez, the most important leader of the masses in our political history, and El Moreno, the most important leader and thinker of the post-war revolutionary left,” said Fernando Peña, executive secretary of the foundation.
Fernando Peña said that the caravan and the subsequent act of remembrance will serve to thank Peña Gómez for his progressive, transformative and honest fight against the terrorist practice that ended the lives of thousands of leftist and revolutionary militants in the 12-year government of 1966 to 1978.
He explained that Peña Gómez bravely and audaciously saved the lives of thousands of leftist leaders.
In addition, he developed an international campaign against the abuses and crimes of the Balaguerista regime that contributed to his overthrow at the polls in May 1978.
Fernando Peña called on the political and social sectors to participate in the tribute.
