Chilean parliamentarians, both from the ruling party and from the opposition, expressed their support for their government’s efforts in terms of borders, since, according to Biobío Chile: “Bolivia would not want to arrive to an agreement on the redirection of undocumented immigrants that enter the country from the neighboring country and accused that this is directly related to the maritime interests it has with Chile”.
According to Biobío Chile,An agreement has not yet been reached with Bolivia to manage the “redirection” of undocumented migrants entering Chile.
In conversation with La Radio, the Chilean Minister of the Interior revealed that they are working hard to reach an agreement with Bolivia that allows that country to receive migrants redirected from Chile and not only Bolivian citizens.
Given this, the general secretary of the PPD, José Toro Kemp, demanded that Bolivia take charge of the immigrants that come from his country.
“It It is essential that Bolivia take charge of safeguarding its borders, because it is not possible that there are illegal immigrants who cross from Bolivia to Chile, therefore, there is a problem that is complex to solve, but we need to see and evaluate the best way to reach the definitive solution”, indicated Toro to Biobío Chile
Failed reroutes to Bolivia
Along these lines, the UDI senator, Iván Moreira, alluded to Bolivia’s denial of the maritime interests it has with Chile, and assured that he had full confidence in the government’s efforts.
“We all know of Bolivia’s maritime aspiration; it brings its consequences and its negative side effects, that I trust that the Chilean authorities will be able to convince the need to reach an agreement with Bolivia (…)”, the legislator told Biobío Chile.
After the military deployment on the border of the Northern Macrozone, the Government reported the weekly balance of these measures with a total of 24 arrests and more than 4,000 identity checks. These measures are implemented at critical points on the border with Peru and Bolivia in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Antofagasta and Tarapacá.
