The wounded man who was seriously injured after the explosion in Old Havana dies

Reynaldo Wright, reported as seriously injured after a gas explosion in Old Havana, died this Wednesday at the Calixto García hospital. As confirmed on social networks his cousin, Nelsy Martiatu, Wright lost some limbs in the accident and died shortly after being admitted to the emergency room.

The explosion, which occurred around midnight in a building on Aguacate Street, between Muralla and Teniente Rey, due to the manipulation of a gas bullet, left another dead. The place where the accident occurred was a refrigeration workshop and the premises it occupied, a building that had only the façade, had a pedicab parking lot and a fried food stand.

The death of Wright, who was called Camaguey, was lamented by family and friends in the publication of Martiatu. According to her own Facebook profile, the deceased had graduated from the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports and worked as a self-employed worker in the refrigeration workshop. On Wednesday, as verified 14ymedio, the area of the explosion was under heavy police surveillance.

According to his own Facebook profile, the deceased had graduated from the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports.

When Wright’s death was not yet known, one of his neighbors, Alfredo de Paz, lamented the state of the wounded man: “Poor Camagüey, he was fixing a cold with a refrigeration gas bullet and it exploded. It’s just that. Camagüey was going very bad, his leg is missing, and his hand is in very bad condition. Unfortunately the other one died instantly. I only ask that our neighbor get better, it’s a pity that this happened to him.”

Yuleidys Catá, a client of the workshop, commented on De Paz’s publication and added that Wright was in a “very serious” state, due to “mishandling” of the gas bullet.

According to the official press in Havana, sources from the Cuba Petróleo Union (Cupet) confirmed that it was not a gas leak, neither liquefied nor manufactured, and that the explosion occurred by accident when a refrigerator was being repaired. The gas bullets provide energy to the tools for plating the metallic exterior of refrigerators, which is why they are common supplies in this type of occupation.

Less than a month ago, on February 13, a similar event occurred in the hotel caribbean, also in Old Havana, which on this occasion left one wounded. The official press also attributed the incident to a “gas leak”, which, according to what some residents told this newspaper, could have come from a leak in the adjoining building.

The most serious case linked to a gas explosion in Cuba is the Saratoga hotel explosionwhere 47 people died on May 6, 2022.
