Remodeling of the El Campín stadium: How much will it cost?

Next August 10 will be the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the ANDstadium Nemesio Camacho El Campinthe most important soccer stadium in Bogotá and one of the most iconic in the country.

As a coincidence of the year in which this anniversary is commemorated, the Bogotá Mayor’s Office again advanced the process of what would be the remodeling of the sports venue located on NQS avenue with 57th street.

(Further: Regasificadora del Pacífico extended its deadline to receive offers).

Given this, the Mayor of Bogotá, through the District Institute of Recreation and Sports (IDRD) and its director, Blanca Inés Durán, provided the details on the remodeling project of the El Campín sports unit, which hopes to meet the high demand for attendees at sporting and entertainment events in a city of more than eight million inhabitants.

The works in the El Campín neighborhood, where the stadium is located, They are focused on making an almost complete renewal of the sector.

“It is an entire urban renewal that will allow this neighborhood to renew itself, to have more vitality. We are also going to have the headquarters of the Philharmonic, a shopping area, a food court and an administrative area where we are going to have offices with the Philharmonic and other entities of the District, among other spaces”, explained Blanca Inés Durán for EL TIEMPO.

A stage at the height of the city

In the case of the stadium, it is sought that it has a ‘facelift’ in its structure, in addition to a significant expansion in its capacity.

“The idea is for it to be a stadium for 50,000 people (today it has a capacity for 39,000, according to IDRD figures) with renovated boxes. It is going to have a whole section of new grandstands that are completely appropriate for Fifa’s requirements, so that Bogotá can truly compete in different international competitions, just as we are now competing in the Women’s Copa Libertadores. The idea is that we can compete for other types of international events, such as those developed by Fifa in Latin America”, added the director of the IDRD.

(We recommend: In the last year prices for civil works rose 13.3%).

Likewise, it is expected that El Campín will have the possibility of continuing to host events of great convocation, such as concerts, taking into account that Bogotá, during 2022, received a large number of musical shows by national and international artists.

“In that case it will depend on the capacity of the concerts and the capacity of the stadium at the time because the grandstand that is removed, depending on where it is located, affects the capacity.”

How much will the entire project cost?

The total cost of the renovation works in the entire area is valued at 2.8 trillion pesoswhich will be paid for through a public-private partnership.

“The work of El Campín basically consists of a public-private alliance presented by an originator (Complejo Cultural y Deportivo Estadio El Campín SAS), which is a consortium made up of a Spanish, a Chilean and a Colombian company. This consortium has been working on this APP for more than four years”, mentioned the official.
