The restaurant car of the passenger train, which made the journey between Athens and Thessaloniki, caught fire as a result of this collision whose origin is still unknown.
The rescuers could not even access another of the wagons because, due to the violence of the collision, it was almost pulverized under the weight of another carriage.
Beyond, dozens of fire trucks and ambulances were stationed next to the railway, which runs next to a highway in the Tempe valley, north of the town of Lárisa (center).
Around 150 firefighters, in addition to 40 ambulances, were mobilized, according to the Greek relief services. Cranes and mechanics were also deployed to clear the rubble and lift the overturned wagons.
Five hours later, firefighters and passengers were still in shock at what local media describe as the worst rail tragedy in the country’s history.
