Spanish deputies ask to expel Nicaragua from the Association Agreement with the European Union

The deputies of the Popular Party of Spain submitted a petition to the Senate that asks the Government of Pedro Sánchez, president of that country, to lead from the European Union all those measures that allow an end to the violation of human rights in Nicaragua.

The measures would include Nicaragua being expelled from the European Union-Central America Association Agreement (ADA). In addition, the intensification of individual sanctions, the impediment of dictatorship officials from entering European territory and the freezing of assets.

The motion of the Spanish parliamentarians, which was approved by a large majority, asks Sánchez “to propose to his European partners, the study of the scope of a revision of the ADA Agreement, which links the European Union with the countries of Central America and between they Nicaragua».

The AdA establishes in its general provisions as principles: «Respect for democratic principles and fundamental human rights, established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Rule of Law».

“For many years they had been denouncing the suppression of the rule of law and freedoms in Nicaragua in the face of the passivity of the international community… The world discovered the true face of Daniel Ortega,” said the spokesman for Ibero-American Affairs of the Popular Parliamentary Group before the Ibero-American Affairs Commission of the Senate, Gonzalo Robles.

Release of prisoners and restitution of nationality

In a press release from the Popular Parliamentary Group, it is urged that Spain and the international community continue to pressure the Ortega y Murillo regime to achieve the freedom of all political prisoners. In addition, guarantee that the harassment of any person who disagrees with Ortega is ended and that civil and political rights are respected.
