The president of USAPresident Joe Biden extended the national emergency surrounding the conflict in Ukraine on March 1 for one year.

“In accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act, the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13660 will continue for one year.” That’s what Biden said in a statement.

In addition, he recalled that since 2014 the presidents of his country have issued several executive orders. They establish that certain Russian actions pose a threat to US security.

“The actions and policies of individuals that undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine They threaten your peace. Also its security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity. And they contribute to the misappropriation of its assets, as well as the actions and policies of the Government of the Russian Federation, including its annexation of Crimea. As well as their use of force in Ukraine, they continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” he notes.

For this reason, the national emergency declared in this and other executive orders must continue in force beyond March 6, 2023, the president added.

UN called for cessation of hostilities in Ukraine

Recently, after one year of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) called for the “cessation of hostilities” between these two nations. Also the withdrawal of Russian troops. The resolution carried out yesterday was produced with a total of 141 votes in favor and 7 against, while 32 countries abstained.

The initiative was eventually co-sponsored by 75 countries, including all of the European Union, the United States and several Latin American countries. Among them Chile, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

The result has been very similar to the votes of last March and last October. Also to end the war in Ukraine, and the countries that voted against this Thursday were -as then- Russia’s staunchest allies in the world. They are Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua and Syria.
