The forest fire that started last saturday february 18 in Pinares de Mayarí, Holguín, continues without control and has already damaged 3,600 hectares of forests and pastures in that province and in Santiago de Cuba.
According to local residents reported to this newspaper, numerous residents of the Mella municipality of Santiago had to be evacuated, without giving them time to take any belongings. As of this Tuesday, there were 75 evacuees, detailed the newspaper Sierra Maestra.
The Santiago de Cuba Provincial Defense Council, reported the official media, installed an “advanced command post” in the vicinity of Nave del Medio, where they spoke with officials from the Mayarí Municipal Defense Council.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel has not gone to the place in person, but on monday he tweeted: “The courage and sacrifice of firefighters, rangers and residents who face in Pinares de Mayarí the fire that devours the beautiful and valuable forests of the eastern region is great. Our greatest recognition of their heroic fight for the nature of Cuba”.
The native Holguín flower, also called jasmine del Pinar, in danger of extinction, is one of the plant species affected by the incident, which has also affected the Mensura Piloto Natural Park, which is a protected area and one of the most biodiverse in the island.
